For some unknown reason, its inventor (though born in Flushing, NY) was nicknamed "Swede".

Sub currently lost in Indonesia with 53 sailors not found yet,I thought they had eject able position markers just for such contingencies

Some do, some don't. The Kursk had one but it failed to eject. Sadly, when things go seriously bad on a boat it can happen in seconds and affect a lot of systems all at once. When I was on boats in the late 70's early 80's, the concept of rescue or escape was officially acknowledged but understood by the rank and file to be highly unlikely except in the most rare of circumstances. The depth of our normal patrol areas was far deeper than the crush depth of the submarine. Quite different than WWII.
