That looks like a blown cooling system rather than a blown engine. Note how the rider seems slow to realise that something is wrong, he would know sooner if it was the engine.

There is a blower in front of the bike for cooling. It lost a lot of parts for a cooling system failure but you never know...

My impression was that they were students at some sort of exposition, maybe a degree project show. Many universities now have a lot of motorcycle related projects and many also have a lot of motorsport engineering degrees. I have actually set the syllabus and taught at a few.
