Ones I've seen have the drive cylinder below the writing surface with a plate across the bottom (where this one has the cylinder) where you run the paper under. That way the drive cylinder isn't in the way of where your hand rests when writing.

I'm swiping this, scaling it up, adding some AR-plate and making a rig for shooting groups on paper(laser point or different caliber single round hole as an aiming-point...)
