My dad, two brothers and my brother-in-law all started out with scroll saws. We cut name plates and Ham Radio call signs. I now have a full wood shop. I just got a the lathe this Christmas. I'm 73 so this is just a hobby.

Hi Kenneth - welcome to HomemadeTools.net :welcome:
No such thing as "just" a hobby :)

Both Thumbs straight UP! The point appears here and there, no such thing as just a hobby. Whether for profit or not is how some differentiate occupation vs pastime...I see it otherwise.
There's plenty of folks working for no purpose, little motivation but income. "I have a job..."
Frank S illustrated such a character. With x-decades of work; in reality he'd only attained 90 days experience, repeated over and over.
Then a group working at what they enjoy. "I'd do it for free.." Don't many of us spend the day in employ, and go home to pursue interests with the same type equipment?
Finally, an avocation generally parallels or dovetails a vocation or career. Some generate items in support of additional interests.
I'd venture group one hasn't a majority of any such practitioners.
