    Shoveling mud.....sounds like pushing a rope.
    Long ago my planters and garden plot had substantial amount of 3/4 crushed aggregate stones. I built a tray combined of perforated and expanded metal to filter out larger bits. Adding a perforated shovel would have sped up work. But I'd have used a square point.
    Over time, likely processed somewhat in excess of a cubic yard.

    Any digging that goes "tink" is hard digging. I, too, screened dirt, er soil, for my raised beds. I built my screen from scrap wood and hardware cloth.
