hi everyone,

I inherited this thing from a box of milling cutters and can't figure out what it is...help!!
It's about 6" overall, has a split shaft on top that looks like would hold a pencil or scribe, this is attached to a spring inside the square shaft. Turning the wheel moves a pointer inside the scale slide with 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400. as the dial gets to the higher numbers the spring tension increases. The only marking is on the back "4223L". It even foiled google image search as it thinks it's a syringe. If anyone can identify it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for everyone's input. This 'thing' is made from nickel silver, even the screws appear to be same, here's some more pics.

It looks similar, though not identical, to an automotive belt tensioning gauge...

Try placing a small scribe in the "holder" end and see if you can push it against the spring: it looks like an adjustable durometer for testing the "hardness" of semi-hard materials, like rubber.

It's a scale to weigh trophy sized anchovies.
Maybe.

it looks like adjustment knob for the milling drums. it controls the microns acceptable after particulate materials are milled. 400 microns for example.

I used to work on telecoms equipment when it was all electro mechanical and it reminds me a bit of a relay contact spring tension checker.

Hey bob, thanks for suggestion, could be for testing tension on something or other. Still waiting for someone to announce they know exactly what it is and how to use it! Got me stumped.

Milling like grinding. Works like an industrial shredder, using two cylinders to pulverize particles to a finer size.

Unless you are referring to milling of wood, i have no help in that case.

How about pulling on the adjustment end with a scale and compare readings. We might be able to derive the device scale's units - unless arbitrary.
