There was a time when one of the requirements for obtaining a PhD in Physics was a demonstrated proficiency in scientific instrument glass blowing. In my university department were examples of handiwork of students and teachers, one of which remains in my private collection today. It's a whimsical piece, a small glass pig with a tiny cork in its nose. If you fill him with water he will wee-wee, but only if you tap his back end. Sadly, scientific instrument glass blowing has become a lost art.
