Greetings all, I would like to introduce myself as a "manufacturing artist in the fields of woodworking and metal working" . In short: I make tools such as planes for woodworkers and make whatever furniture comes my way.My shop is full of ancient machinery of both American and British origin, plus some European stuff too: I like reclaiming older machines from the dead and I do have three phase electrickery which helps.See some assorted pictures of planes , machines etc.

The group of planes features a bevel down smoother with African Blackwood (Dalbergia Melanoxylon), a 5mm thick blade bedded at 55° . The minis are improved versions of an often seen set of these planes made in India . The other plane picture shows one of my J series which is a Jack plane , bevel up , bed at 20° which uses Veritas blades as well as those made by me. You can see other planes made by me on my web site marcouplanes.com The wooden plane is a chamfer plane based on that formerly made by a Japanese gentleman who I believe has retired at an age close to 100 years.....(Plane makers never die).

Wow, very nice attention to detail on both your wood and plane projects. I went to your site looking for any details regarding the wooden chamfer plane that you mentioned. Can you show a few more views of it, or provide a sketch as to how is built, made and works? It's an intriguing and complex looking little plane, and I would like to learn more about it. It's interesting, to me anyway... just how much knowledge is lost when one dies... Sad to ponder.

Hi Brian, thanks for your interest in these chamfer planes. I make them in batches of 50 or so using Afzelia which is an African hardwood known for great stability. I machine a vee groove into lengths of timber to make the fences. The plane itself has a brass sole bonded with an industrial super glue. Then blade is O1 steel which I send out for correct heat treatment.I make the brass knurled nuts , easier now that I have acquired a quick knurler.The plane can slide across the fence housing so that one can use the entire width of the blade. Very useful tool for furniture making. One needs to be consistently quite accurate to make batches of these eg the plane must have a tight fit in the housing.I use a tee slot cutter to mill the slots for the plane to fit.
