    Old new guy...

I am a retired electronics tech with a machine shop in the garage addition I built. Made a foundry out of an old kiln and a PID controller to feed my machines. My drill press is 3 phase with VFD and my lathe is run by a D/C treadmill motor and modified control...soon to be replaced by a 3phase motor and VFD. I built my DRO for my mill from a kit and my lathe ... is a "frankenlathe" at least 3 other lathes gave up parts to create what I have now.

Hi Sleykin - welcome to HomemadeTools.net

Sounds like you'll fit in well here. Post some pics of your lathe if you get a chance.

    Hi Sleykin,

    Maybe you can help.

I need to make a heat treating oven and plan to use a PID to control the temp. I'd rather have (or in addition to the PID) a controller that includes a programmable clock for sequences of different temps for different periods of time. I'm not very electronics savvy, so I don't know what to call that kind of controller or if they even exist for less than mega-bucks.

    TIA,
    UncleBob

I built mine in 2011 using a JLD612 PID and an SSR. I bought them on eBay as kits go for about $20. This forum is where I got a lot of information from.

The kits generally come with a K thermocouple that only goes up to 400C* so you need a different TC for higher temps.
Not sure why they want so much more for the JLD612 than the REX C100 but both of them are about the same functionally.

Hope this is helpful. I think you will need a separate timer for shutting the system down. The JLD612 will allow you to set ramp up times or temperature stages, but I didn't mess with that.
    This is the other manual..
