I think the keys to success are; The quality and age of the tape measure, the length you have the tape extended initially. The angle you hold the tape in relation to the cap, and how firmly you hold the bottle.
Also note, in reference to and earlier thread regarding the sliding hook on your tape measure, using your tape in this manner may accuracy of your measurements. But then so will all of the beers you have to open perfecting the process
