Out of reach Light Switch

My son and I were inspecting an abandoned house about to go up for auction in anticipation of placing a bid. Saw this adaptation someone made for a light switch that was mounted in the ceiling. Thought I should share with everyone. Curious if anyone has seen this done before?

It's both ULand NEC........UnLimited creativity, and NEC, Never Ever Copy.
A fan-type pull switch would be acceptable, but string wasn't cut short like chain supply.
hemmjo will say "see what he did there?"

Girlfriends basement, most everything electrical is in the joists. It's early 50's, guess it beat drilling cinder blocks for anchor screws, saved a few feet of wire, power cords not draped across bench or floor, if there should ever be a pipe leak, they are going to be the very last issue.

Funny, way back in my college dorm days, I constructed something similar using string, drafting tape and soda can tabs. (Okay, they might not have been soda can tabs.)

I threaded the string thru the tabs which were hooked up from over the pillow end of the bed, up to the ceiling and then along the suspended ceiling 'runners' and then down again to the switch plate. The result was that I could turn the light on and off without leaving the "comfort" of the dorm bed.

I am absolutely sure I couldn't have been the first to do this, either.
