The gate at our shooting range has at least 25 locks on it...

That is a good way to give many access without providing a master key. If someone violates rules or is delinquent with dues, etc. you can just take their lock out of the string. Everyone else can still get in, no need to rekey then get everyone new keys

- much nicer than the simple on I made where we took a length of chain and the padlocks each linked into each other, one end on the chain and the other end on the other end of the chain.

Problem is, it's only as strong as the poorest quality lock in the system.

Locks only keep honest people out...

I've seen this on gates leading to cellular tower sites. Other corpotatiions. government agencies rent space on the towers and each has their own lock.

There is a commercial product called "Stymie Lock" (https://www.stymielock.com/) which alllows many locks to a gate and prevents the issue of 'a cheap chain stretched across, and stupid users sometimes lock out other users by not putting their locks in proper series configuration'

Very well, built, I find it intuitive to use, and I've seen it on lots of shared sites, such as communications tower sites, water tower & tank sites (which often have radio communications equipment co-located) and such. FWIW, City of Raleigh, NC, has them on a lot of their sites.

The guy who invented it is in NC...

It's a pretty good invention, though the patent has expired. I would just copy the idea for my use, because at $350 for the base unit and $50 for additionals, I could build it from stuff in the inventory pile.

What is most surprising is that there are no useful images on the company site, had to go to the patent to get the above...
