Pair of side rebate planes

There are many very fine planes in this encyclopaedia and I hesitate to present this pair of side rebate planes. They were made about 30 years ago, during slack periods or weekends, before I had seen any pictures of traditional side rebate planes, in eg beech. So their design is premised on the later Stanley type, which I had seen, but did not possess, nor did I, at the time, have paring chisels.
They cost nothing except the labour, which was slight, made from salvaged walnut (American), rosewood & brass. The blades are formed from a pair of steel rulers, which, being spring steel hold an edge sufficiently well not to need hardening. They were cut down at 9", so these are bulky tools. The forward piece of brass can be removed for working up to a stop, but I have never done this.

One plane rests against a box of 66 timber samples kindly given to me from a former colleague. On top is a ruler from New Zealand with 21 tiny native samples.
