    Parting Tool Holder

I been working on my small lathe doing a few things to it I been wanting to do, I made a new tool post holder for it a while back along with a boring bar holder but never made a parting blade holder, until yesterday.

I had this 1/16” X 1/2" X 4 ½” HSS blade in the drawer that I thought would be about the perfect size for this little creature, so I sit down and did a little drawing and this is what I came up with, this parting tool holder has a tongue protruding out on the right side so it can be clamped in the tool post just like a tool bit, this is also how the boring bar holder is clamped, the parting tool holder is made from O-1 steel which is hardened and ground, the holder has a .055” Dp. X ½” Wd. Slot milled and ground at just the right height so the top of the parting blade is on center of the machines axis, it has a flat plate with six 4-40 flat head screws clamping the blade tightly in its seat.

Below you will find a few photos of the machining process and the tool installed in the lathe.

As always thanks for looking and happy machining.

    rossbotics,

Very nice, clean workmanship as always! That is a great addition to your new tool post. I could not tell from the pictures if the tool itself is inclined or has zero rake. By the way, I sure like the tool post with the corner removed from the tail stock end. That side sure can get it the way at times.

The blade is at a o-rake, yes the clearance on the right hand side of the tool post really does help, need all the clearance you can get on these little machines

    rossbotics,

Thanks for the reply. I am now thinking of making a rear parting tool holder. I like your clamping mechanism.

That sounds cool making a rear one, I made the clamping mech. so I could work really close to the chuck.

For me a rear parting tool has been the way to go, the smaller the lathe the more you need one. No more dig ins and I can now part off 2 inch steel discs with power feed. As long as you have a crosslide that will accept one.

    olderdan,

Another option for those who do not have a suitable cross slide for a rear parting tool would be to make a new cross slide. A few years ago I re-purposed a production cross slide for an 11" Logan lathe.

Nice modification, I happen to have done a similar thing using a Myford super 7 slide on my SB.

Not a quick job but well worth it especially if you mill in the lathe, more on my builders page.
I have done so many mods to this lathe over the years I now think I should have put them in one place.
