    This from wikipedia:
The name paternoster ("Our Father", the first two words of the Lord's Prayer in Latin) was originally applied to the device because the elevator is in the form of a loop and is thus similar to rosary beads used as an aid in reciting prayers.

Ahh, somewhere where the people aren’t so stupid that they can use this elevator without warning signs, safety gates and instructions on how to get on and off. The safety nannies would have a f cking heart attack if they saw this.

Would be somewhat challenging in a wheel chair, but do-able for the spry. I'm afraid these were made for a higher-I.Q. generation.

re: "higher-I.Q. generation" you mean people who actually pay attention and think about what they are doing? Possible if evolution continues
for another thousand years we might see those people more often, there are a few now.

I believe the last ones in Germany, a place notorious for this type of lift, have been removed. My mother was afraid of escalators, but she had no problems with these lifts. I was always a bit dubious about using them. The last time I was in one was our Airline's offices in Hamburg many years ago.
