    I guess it’s because this is a two man lathe.
    One man provides the power and the other does the machining.

    Alphabet figures on the lower left tell me all there is to know, goofy grin included.
    I see little chance of producing a feedrate or significant depth of cut. A single treadle might [did] power sewing machines, anything similar had compound or duals.
