Thought and tried alternate materials like vinyl and PVC. Ability to hold a form and entirely rounded shape were drawbacks. Metal offered lowest profile, width and the corner to 'disconnect' a thin scale from a flat surface. Wherever you finger the item it separates from the floor of tray quickly. It is intended for a drawer, transport is possible, but the open end allows pushing odd shapes beyond the edge to retrieve.
And the rare occassion...when bench is not awry!
