a single 9v battery and a couple of copper strips are doing a good job of keeping the snails out of the herbs. Never seen snails move that fast

I've never seen snails that large in the wild. Are those common? (I'm in Tennessee in the southeastern US.)

I grew up in SoCal, most of which is desert, and anywhere there was a stable water supply, we had snails about that big. Was one wandering about the garden at one house with a silver C painted on both sides so we wouldn't accidentally squish Charley when I was a kid.

I understand they have larger snails in France. Cook them in garlic and butter, and eat them. I've found I like Escargot, myself.

Went on my mom's honeymoon with our 2nd step-father, to Washington state, and they have slugs there bigger than the snails at home, and in multiple bright colors!

Regarding fans of escargot

I think you can omit the battery in that circuit by substituting two dissimilar metals instead of the copper strips. A single copper wire close to a single galvanised wire will do the trick. The moisture in snail slime will result in a current between the wires sufficient to deter the most persistent hungry snail.
This is similar to the metallic taste you sometimes get if you have amalgam tooth fillings and put aluminium foil in your mouth.
