Frank,
Thanks for sharing. We had to do a similar test in our HS welding class as one of the final tests for welding. It was satisfying when it passed, and you appreciated the difficulty of properly welding this. There were many that broke right away on that U-bend.
Brings back memories.
Thanks for sharing.

Kent a broken U bend equates to one or more of the 4 too's hot ,cold, slow, fast.
I have tested guys who had absolutely horrible cap passes but would pass a U bend a 90° twist a nick and strike or a tensile with no problem
then there would be the guys who had a knack for laying down a piece of art that would break into 3 pieces when bent 2 coupon halves and a bead.
We had this 1 guy who forgot to turn on his gas My CAQC started to say something but I nudged him in the ribs and shook my head. My policy was if a guy forgot or had his machine set wrong at the beginning and noticed his mistake very early on into the test he could stop and procure a new pair of samples. But if he continued until finished I would ask him if he felt comfortable with his sample if he wasn't I would ask him why not and depending on his explanation I might have allowed a second test, otherwise it was 60 days before he could test again and possibly be called on for some code welding.
Out of the 50 or 60 welders we had there were only 3 that I allowed to weld on the structure members of my elevators even though we had 30 who could and did pass any weld test we administered to them. My elevators were freight elevators and sometimes they might have a platform as large as 12 meters by 3 meters or specked to lift 20,000 KG You don't use just any rod burner for those you needed a WELDER.
