Let me guess he has a sprinkler system and 1 of the heads didn't pop up but sprayed anyway. the thatch in his lawn is so thick it is more like a carpet than a lawn.
Maybe he should areolate his lawn before he has even more problems.

I reckon it is artificial turf. Jumping up and down on it will exacerbate the hollow underneath allowing even more water to drain into the area
Definitely instant lawn, natural grass or otherwise, as a lawn planted from seed would never do that.
