Portable traffic lights - photo

Encountered those before, across Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania; typically where road work is going on, especially two lane roads and bridges. They'll divert traffic to one side while holding opposing cars in place, then switch to accommodate that line of vehicles. Some look centrally manipulated, others with signalmen at each end linked by 2-way radio.
I'm sure there were accidents when manual signalmen were not in sight of each other.

I remember (before I was old enough to drive) that they would hand a flag to the last car let through. That would signal the guy at the other end to let the line waiting to start to move.

Yep, I remember that, I got so excited once when we were the last car in line and I got to hold the flag. Was maybe 5 or 6, the years blur when we have seen so many.
