Yes you can, I have some drills that came from Supercheap Auto, they're slightly different to more popular brands (the case that is), as a result they're $90 odd each. yeh right! I bought a battery pack from Ebay for $22, same voltage different case, stripped them both down and re-cobbled the new batteries into my old case, works just fine. The biggest problem for me is finding appropriate recipient cases, the drills only recognize the case, they don't give hang what's inside it.
