They do worship their trees in Japan. You'll find no higher reverence for them than in that country. You can tell from the crowd gathered and the care taken with binding the root ball that this is more a ceremony than a mere task.

I saw that being done to a large spruce tree in Shanghai China, across the street from the hotel I was staying in. It wasn't that big of a root ball but it was still impressive.
