This is a post I wrote about making a tool that could be viewed from the top to set the height of my lathe tools and to counteract the negative tool tips on boring tools which no other tool could do.
Read it all as on my journey, I failed in the first instance, but got it spot on a little later.

Hi Blogwitch,
A very good solution technically not too sophisticated, and very usable on a small lathe:thumbsup:, with a small led added on the base it can bee perfect for those who have tired eyes, I'm speaking for me ;-), it's never too bright for a good sight and the led technology is really a miracle for a few $$.

The main reason I decided I need to make one is old age, I couldn't get down low enough to see the tool tip, also I use replaceable tipped boring bars, where you can't use a normal height gauge type as they have a negative rake tip.
With this, I find that my machine light gives plenty of illumination for me to see the lines very clearly.
You could use any sized prism, if you can afford it.

I really like the idea as my eyes don't seem to be getting any younger, heck it seems that no part of of me seems to be getting any younger for that matter.

I have been trying to keep my workshop going for the last ten years, not really old age, but disabilities that are catching up with me.
I have designed, made and bought all sorts over the years to allow me to use my machines in safety with less strength. This is just one of them.
