Re-forging hammers + swaging tool

Good morning folks, as its winter ive been lighting the forge up a bit recently and decided that i needed bigger hammers, obviously spending £80 each on purpose made hammers was out of the question so this happened.

I can see you enjoyed yourself doing this, but since you cut and then ground the peins to shape, it seems unnecessary to forge and,presumably, retemper and rehandle them. You did temper, didn’t you? I appreciate that you have your own unique hammers, but if bits fly off, they can penetrate a long way through a leather apron. Lovely sharp hatchet! If you put blacking inside the hammer’s eye, you can see where it needs paring back.

Philip, you are absolutely correct, I'm sure i would have ended up with much smarter hammers if i'd done it all with the grinder but necking it down added a bit of length and this was primarily a learning exercise with usable tools being a welcome byproduct!
i normally use matt black spray paint in the eye of a tool when fitting it up but in this case the eye was still black from the forge and didn't require any.

Cap, glad you appreciated it, the hatchet was the cheapest one i could find on the whole of ebay, i messed around heat treating it and put a chisel grind on it now its my dedicated workshop axe and i use it more than any other bladed tool in my shed!
