    The late Fred Dibnah MBE did that sort of thing with nothing more than a ladder and hammer.

    For those poor souls who are not familiar with Fred, I recommend this video.

    I was a great fan of Fred Dibna a remarkable man indeed, I did scaffolding for a couple of years in my late teens (still got the spanner) but watching his exploits made me cringe. I guess we need machines now because there are no more Fred Dibna's to be had.

    I seem to recall that he did do a cooling tower bit by bit, when there was no room for explosive style demolition. Fred did fire and explosive demolitions as well as the brick by brick.
