Weight of the snow??

My question too, why bother? The snow on cables would be negligible compared to the weight of heavy traffic. Am I missing something?

Maybe it turns to ice, chucks fall off and cause damage to cars etc... a large enough piece would go through a windshield and hurt folks.

Yes, that's a very plausible reason, thanks. (I live in a warm climate and never have to consider ice as being hazardous)
