Restored finial

Hi All
I have been renovating a house we bought several years ago. When we got it was invested with rats. So unfortunately the house ended up with the nickname name 'RATS'. While looking for some roofing materials on eBay I came across a finial which was perfect for the roof. So the seller agreed she would package up the item and send it to me. (which was very kind)
Once I received the item it was cleaned and repainted ready to be fitted. I know this type of thing won't be everyone's cup of tea but I am really happy with the result and it hopefully will look okay from the ground.

Watered down masonry paint wash

Masonry base coat

Weathering chimney pot

Detail finished ready to fit

Need to get roof finished so the finial can be mounted

I know this won't appeal to everyone but I couldn't resist buying it

Perfect topper. Be sure to write the story of why it's there and secrete the writeup in some corner of the restoration so it can be discovered and enjoyed by future owners.

It's very satisfying to see that other denizens of this forum have a quirky sense of humor just like mine.

Marv I think anyone with a hobby like ours needs a sense of humour But most of all a great imagination to overcome anything that is put in front of us. Sometimes the solutions can be instant and others take a bit of time. This forum is great for stimulating the grey matter. Love the idea of hiding a note for the future. Didn't even thick of doing that.

The ability to see the humor in everything is essential. After all, if you think this 'life' thing is serious, you'll go mad for sure.

Phrase the note a bit on the risqué side. Archaeologists love to find ancient inscriptions but they're really happy if the inscription, once translated, is a dirty joke; they find so few of those.

That's why they're digging up the rest of Pompeii. The walls have lots of Latin graffiti, many of the form "for a good time, visit the house of ...". It really was a party town.

It would not surprise me to learn that ou get a visit from the planning department! (Only joking! I hope)

We are all beset with 'planning departments' and others capitalizing on our well being. I don't recall being polled or delivering my remarks on their various initiatives; and when they convene are rarely public - like council meetings. Let's wish the rat is not discovered soon, if at all, for the same reason deer hunters use tree stands.


It can be your own example of Galileo's finger (re 1822, Galileo, Copernicus, heliocentricism. . .). Best rabbit hole ever.
