    Retired Hobbyist Metalworker

Hi folks! Just a retired fellow with a small lathe and mill who likes to make things (often tools or modifications for the lathe and mill themselves). I enjoy working on the machines themselves as much as I do making things with them.

Got a question about a nifty spring type parting tool found on here, so signed up to ask about it.

    Make chips!

Hi Metalmuncher - welcome to HomemadeTools.net

Sounds like you'll fit in well here.

What's your question about the spring type parting tool?

Thanks! Here is a link to the thread where I posted my question (#12). In other forums I am able to tap/click on the post number of a thread, and open just that post in a browser tab. This is a convenient way to generate a URL that goes directly to that post, instead of to the thread in general. When a thread has thosands of posts in it, a very handy way to point to a piece of info I want to save for later. I can't seem to do that here. Is there a way to open a single post in this forum?

You got it right with that link; it points straight to your post. We also have post numbers that are one-post links. However, instead of the link pointing to a page with just one post on it, the link points to the original post, but within the context of the thread. We use links with "fragment identifiers" - the end of the link with a hash symbol, that looks like this: #post95641. Links like that will scroll your browser window to a specific part of the page; in this case, to the exact post.

Ah, I see that in this forum, tapping the post number does not re-open a single post in another tab, but it does modify that identifier at the end of the current URL, as you explained. So the difference is in not creating more steps for me having to subsequently navigate back to the tab with the whole thread on the other forums, as on this forum, the whole thread remains in the current window. Very nice! Thanks!
