Imperfections? Disaster is more like it.

Plaster ceilings and walls. Those imperfections are typically not visible to the naked eye under normal light conditions. You can put a flashlight up against most any wall and see similar things even with drywall, though that ceiling may be a bit on the extreme side. Perfectly smooth walls would be nice but are not necessary or in most cases cost effective. That is one of the reasons textures were applied to ceiling and walls.
