My Uncle flew B-24's in WWI and was once asked if he ever saw an Me 262 on any of his 35 bombing missions. He replied, "You didn't see 'em, but you heard 'em, then you had holes all along your fuselage."

About 20 years ago a millionaire aviation buff decided to make about a dozen Me 262 identical replicas and sell them. They got an old corroded war trophy that had been sitting outside a Navy Base in Virginia, and disassembled it to create a master drawing set. A work acquaintance of mine was one of the sheet metal fabricators. Everything remained true to the original except of the engine, which was a GE "J" model, instead of the obsolete Junkers motor. This business venture is a remarkable story in itself.

That would've been WWII. (But then, we knew what you meant. )
