And what's so wrong with an (accurately placed) built-in bubble level?

My question is why bother having a level on a drill motor in the first place? If the plane you are drilling in is not level in the first place having a level on your drill is not going to do any good. You need your bore holes to be perfectly perpendicular to the surface you are drilling, then nothing else matters. To achieve this, you need a guide not a bubble.
And pistol shaped drill motors are the sorriest excuse for a precision drilling device ever invented.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

If alignment matters anybody in their right mind would use a drillpress, or if it REALLY matters, a mill. Horses for courses.
