And the purpose of one of these would be???
I can't visualize any advantage or reason for one of these contraptions. You still have to get out of your vehicle to open the fuel door. Unless they standardize fuel vent caps like those used in some auto racing or on inflight fighter jets. You can pay at some stations in a few countries by an app on your phone, If you are too lazy to dispense your own fuel move to New Jersey. The last Time I was in that state it was against the law to dispense your own fuel
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Who or what opened the door and removed the cap…and how does it get replaced when finished?

My 2018 Honda Accord has no gas cap. Once the door is opened by pressing it, the pump spout can be inserted directly into the fill tube; nothing needs to be capped when filling is completed.

I suspect similar arrangements exist on more modern vehicles.

My 2021 Silverado has the same setup. No filler cap.

Good catch! This is a flap that is opened and a cap that is unscrewed.

Here is an article that directly calls out this type of invention:
    https://www.thedrive.com/news/gas-pu...n-nobody-asked

There is an insta video of it in operation and the robot does open the door, unscrew the cap, pick up the nozzle, etc. etc.

There is also an image from a Danish company that invented it.

The sub-heading of the article is fantastic:

Some inventors are so preoccupied with whether they can, they never stop to think if they should.
