OK, this is used to calculate resistance per foot (that would be tha last side shown). The first side would be the wire gauge of the conductor (though is looks like they used a drill bit for that).
On the first side, it looks like the wire gauge is along the inside of the device and current is on the outside of the device. AWG 8 is about double the current capacity of AWG 12.
