I seem to remember as a kid camping in really cold weather that if you tried to quickly melt really dry, cold snow in a pot you could scorch it. Had to melt slowly until you had liquid.

Yes, resists heat as an insulator, why igloo's don't cave in readily, even with a small fire going. Snow, full of air; ice, very little.

Yes, really bad weather. GK is again an emergency center, they set up heating tents there. We offered use of our house, the heat is on and there's hardly anything in it...lots of room.
