I remember as an apprentice hot forming the sections in a furnace and then pressing them in a press jig, must have made thousands.
Why did they tie the rope to the lathe carriage? There's no mechanical advantage on that pulley. They could have just directly stretched it with the carriage, no rope and pulley needed.
