    all you need to do is redesign the pivot so it can be moved up and down the mast, and you could almost set intervals, and use a taller candle, and then keep moving down the mast on subsequent uses of the same candle. (sorta like one of those courtship candles with the spiral follower, and the string)

    That's awesome. I'm heading down a Google search rabbit hole of different designs. I love ingenuity and simplicity in designs. Could you attach a candle to the bottom of a cup, fill the cup with water, and wait for the candle to burn down to the level of the water?

    unless attached to the cup = no - the candle keeps rising if untethered and eventually burns completely away - there is a design which capitalises on this to keep the height of the flame at a constant point so the room illumination doesn't change over the course of the evening.
