It might seem they would be good for that, but there are less bulky, more reliable fire starters with a much longer shelf life.

A much more important item to have "in your survival kit" is the knowledge or how to properly use all of the items in your kit!!!!

I like it because with knowledge, you can have tinder and starter all in one

I know this was for demonstration purposes only, but it takes just a small amount of steel wool and a few dried leaves or shavings off of a twig or dry weed and the battery to start the fire, But a striker flint in your kit and the back of your knife takes up the least amount of space never goes bad, with a little practice can be just as fast starting a fire as a match
Never try to tell me it can't be done

There aren't many electronic devices today that use a 9 volt battery so, if you neglected to put one in your kit, you're more likely to have an AA battery in some of your equipment (e.g. flashlight, headlamp, lantern, radio) in which case this trick...

Starting fire using gum wrapper and battery - GIF

    is the way to go.

I can't tell for sure whether the gray stuff in the video is steel wool or dryer lint. Regardless, the latter is good for fire starting; I've ignited it with a small magnifying lens.

IMO, the best fire starting equipment to keep in your emergency kit is a couple Bic lighters.

When I used to smoke, a single Bic would last many cartons and the sparker always still worked when the butane was gone. Used sparingly to ignite tinder, they would last way longer than any time you're likely to spend in the woods.

Some of my friends were concerned about them working after being exposed to water. I submerged one in a glass of water for several days, pulled it our, shook off the water, and it lit instantly.

Disposable Bic lighters were a favorite supply in the legendary "Bosnian Survivalist" interview.
