The ship stopped very quickly, something else besides the collision must have helped surely?

Only guessing, but one would hope that black ship was in full reverse before they hit. It also appears the black ship was on the wrong side to the channel. In a narrow with ships passing "The starboard side shall be closest to the bank".

Pilot misread his charts as the All Welland Good Canal.
Every collision stems from the failure to maintain a proper forward watch, combined with control of propulsion to maintain steerageway.

Or the Florence Spirit was heavy loaded and the red one was light loaded. I also noticed a large black "scrape" along the side of the red ship indicating not the first time something like this has happened!

July 2020 collision between the Canadian-flagged general cargo vessel Florence Spirit and Antigua and Barbuda-flagged general cargo vessel Alanis in the Welland Canal, Ontario (M20C0188): In Marine Safety Advisory Letter No. 01/21, the TSB encouraged McKeil Marine Limited to review notices, training, equipment and/or procedures on board the Florence Spirit to ensure rudder angles are applied in a manner that yields the desired lift force.

The investigation is in the report phase now.
