Shortened 5/16-18 tap
Never throw away those broken taps, you never know when one of them may be the only thing that will work to clean out the threads.
Today I was working on a project that had some threaded holes filled with trash and paint. it was impossible to use as normal length tap in a few of the holes only about 1 3/4" clearance
I had a broken but still very sharp 2 fluted 5/16-18 tap that came to my rescue. first I ground the tip to make it a bottoming tap then ground a half inch off the shank and ground the end square.
there is no possibility of ever using a tap handle where I needed the tap and I wasn't at all concerned with making the square perfect
