Over the years I was one of the principal developers of a parking system called Car-Stackers we had 2 level 3 level and even a 4 level line of vertical parking machines.
beginning with the 4 post design not all that different than 4 post automotive service lifts which we also built by the 1000s for private label of at least dozen lift company names.
we also made 2 post lifts for the automotive service industry and from the parent company dozens of spin off companies emerged
As time went on after the company I owned a small part of had sold the patents I retained the rights of manufacture and further developments which later I focused on the freight elevator industry.
However here are some examples of my 4 post 2 post and even a single post parking/ service lift design.
IN the gif I can see the platform design as having its origin from the company I was once associated with.

and the single post quite possibly could have been a spin off of my single post lift

I did a lot of the preliminary design work on the fully automated parking system installed in Dubai my work was in the structural and mechanical aspects of the scope. I still have most of my cad drawings filed away
Once completed whoever did the automation on the system did a jam up job for the time period. a driver would just drive into a stall exit his vehicle hold his cell phone up to the Bluetooth scan reader or insert his credit card into the reader His vehicle would then be hauled on the platform to the appropriate spot raise it to a predetermined level eject the vehicle into its parking space then the platform would return to the cue of waiting transport platforms.
the main issue with those mega automated parking facilities is the drivers themselves. on average it could take from 45 seconds to 2 full minutes for some drivers to exit their vehicles because of needing or wanting to gather items to carry with them and up to 5 minutes on return to load their stuff back into their vehicles particularly if they had been shopping.
The solution was to have a separate car park area with valets who would drive the vehicles to the waiting stalls
Another huge issue is obviously maintenance.
Another such system I designed for the Sultan Center in Kuwait was strictly valet with 4 elevators and turntables the valets as I had envisioned it would drive the vehicles onto a lift rise to which ever level there was open spaces then drive to the appropriate parking spot the turn tables were there to alleviate the need to do any maneuvering other than straight forward or reverse .
Shown is half of the valet carpark system

I was just picturing the Tesla trying to drive to its owner, disregarding the lack of ground next to it.

Why would anyone park their tesla just get out of it and tell it when to return just let it drive around the city its not like it would ever encounter any intelligent life forms. It could drive itself around and mingle with the myriad of other brain dead drivers driving around aimlessly

FrankS, you may be way ahead of your time. I’ve read of predictions of this very phenomenon, where packs of autonomous vehicles roam residential streets awaiting a summons. Reduces the need (and expense) of public parking at the cost of roving, localized traffic jams.
    Welcome to the future!
