I'm not a smart man, but I would say that the barge had more on it's plate than it could say grace over!

So they towed it offshore where it did a clamshell close.

Over loaded age weakened barge and 2 excavators are now a fish habitat.
a hundred years from now or possibly 300 a submersible and a team of weak end ship wreck hunters will scratch their heads over how and why the vessel sank where it did.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

That's just got to have been overloaded. Probably being really old and rusting away wouldn't help?

Is it possible it was actually two barges tied end to end? I am not sure if that would work trying to transfer sand off one barge to the second barge in a relay operation but one excavator got ahead of the other and too much weight simply got piled too close to the end of barge #1 or Barge #2
