I've done this many ties but I found out early on that it was best to start the tooth cut near the bottom of the tapered end when making these gears that way as the depth of cut progresses and the teeth are beginning to take shape you do not experience the tooth movement around the perimeter. Cutting a radius grove prior to cutting the teeth is also advisable especially when the thickness of the disk is near to the same as the diameter of the tap.

A clever idea, but I think you would have to pay attention to the correct diameter of the blank and the thread pitch, to make sure that the thread pitch is evenly divisible into the wheels designed pitch diameter. It would be interesting to see this done with an acme tap. I would think it would give you more tooth strength. I love all these little brain stimulator videos!

Interesting. How do you get the tap and the chuck/live centre to counter rotate at 4.07 approx?
