Clever ! Spring-loaded stubs for each end of roll. Normally sprung to open position. Push roll through they return to normally horizontal position inside tube at both ends.
Even if you put it in backwards, just lift it through and out. Turn roll around and put it in correctly. (Pause GIF at 0:02 seconds and you'll see the spring-levers.)

Seth Wheeler patent in 1891. There is an image of correct way meant to orient roll on roller. The whole point of the patent for a roll of 'toilet paper'.

    Japanese Toilet Paper Thingy

I'm gonna build one. I'm gonna use see through acrylic. Get it ready for the museum. You'll see (get it? you'll see/ see through). Otherwise, even if I had enough Yen, I wouldn't know how to ask for one. I don't speak Japanese. Pictures are worth 2 words. I, really, like this thing !,,,Perhaps easily amused am I.

100% agree ipsumental, very clever and by correctly I assume you mean dangly bit out? I hate paper against the wall! Go into a long drop of a damp foggy morning and finding the paper stuck to the wall and moisture has wicked up into the roll is not nice!
