Prolong Brass/Steel Brush Life

On my bucket list is wearing out a brush BEFORE all the bristles fall out. This is an attempt to reach that goal!

Update: Done May, 2016. Still going as of Mar, 2019!

Thanks for sharing. I thought of a similar idea just a few months ago but using thinned epoxy or polyester... since I, too, have my share of brushes showing "bristle brush pattern balding"!

Now, seeing your video, I am wondering what kind of wicking would spoil that option? I must admit, I wouldn't have anticipated wicking to be an issue in this application!

If you use something that dries hard it won't wick afterwards. During the process I used a thin acrylic paint and it only rose up a couple millimeters into the part of the brush that will (probably) never be used. It does not seem to take too much to hold the bristles in place when the brush is new, because they are tightly packed in the holes, so filling in the tiny spaces between wood and bristles is very effective.

Cheap Harbor Freight steel bristle brushes often used for welding suffer the same sort of illness. I will hopefully remember to try to experiment with one of those at some time later. I never really thought of doing something like that.
