    Totally off topic. At one of the job sites I used to work at, the guys had installed something that looked very similar to this in their operator cab above a train loader. No oil drum though. The pipe just went out the wall and straight down to the ground. Because, you know, the bathroom was like 30 seconds away.

    I am guessing that the purpose of the crusher is simply to reduce bulk/contamination before the glass is sorted (I presume with a magnet) and then recycled.

    Here in the US, the EPA is all over these types of lights as far as "safe" disposal is concerned. I doubt that any of that will be recycled. Looks like the barrel will allow the contents to settle out rather than become air born. I remember playing swords with them as a kid....Hell, I turned out alright

    Here in Oz, the only place I know who claims to recycle them is IKEA. I always save up my tubes (fluro, CFL, etc) and every few months drive past the IKEA store and drop them in the bin thing there. Honestly I haven't a clue what/how IKEA deals with them - to quote another... "not my problem".
