    Large oversized files

Does any file maker still make large files?
I used to have a 30" long file that was about 2 1/2 or 3" wide about 1/2" thick or maybe thicker
I'm not looking for one that large but the largest i can find any more is the little 14"

I don't think you have many choices past Mercer or Nicholson...

It is Japanese, Frank. I would hope it is good quality. I would like one myself, but at $85 I am still thinking about it.

    A 16" is not much more than a 14.
There used to be large files called mold or core files that were huge you could get them in a multitude of of cut patterns from rasp Coarse to almost jewel smooth but I haven't seen any in several decades.
Me and files have a hate love relationship. They hate me but I love them

    I appreciate the sentiment Frank.

Like so many industries I suspect the foundry works are using other methods now for finishing out molds and cores.
In the past decades even die grinders don't get the love they used to.
CNC's have changed so many things small shops have a tough time getting seconds on good hand working and non-CNC tooling.

Like so many things that would be put to good use, I have seen large 'obsolete' tools that have been painted over, hanging on a wall or worse, rusting away in someone's tool cabinet when they could be doing good work in the hands of someone that will put them to work.
I try to save and restore and teach others to as well, (As I know many of you here also do)

I have found a few large ones at flea markets and garage sales over the years.
I love using files, the feel of a nice sharp file cutting a shape or draw filing is very fulfilling to me.
Years ago I picked up a large Grob Band Filer thinking I could convert it into a bandsaw. It wasn't possible but I still have that monster in the barn.

If you like I'll look and see if I still have one of the big files out there.

So, a Texas-sized file...you'd probably have to make it yourself. A great project! This YouTuber has a moderately large one on his bench as he talks about file making:

That's a good idea Inner, a win, win. I have been wanting to learn to make some rasps and files for years. Thanks for the link.
