Apparently no one knew about the emergency release pins on those European barriers. Since that was not an ICE or an ICEII train the barriers on those tracks can be manually raised by simply pulling a release pin. Still requires a bit of muscle though.

Pins or no pins, why didn't either of them just drive through the gates? Sure, the car would have gotten scratched, and a gate might have been broken. But now, there's a whole trainload of other people involved.

For topical application, only. Not to be taken internally or used in com-
bination with other drugs or alcohol, except as directed by your shaman.
Do not operate heavy equipment, unless you actually know how to.

It just goes to show that many people do not or cannot think clearly in a stressful situation.

I agree, that would have been the logical thing to do. The barrier got smashed up anyway and the damage would have been a lot cheaper than the bent car. It is amazing how cars seem to have a perchant for stopping on level crossings. All level crossings were removed in South Africa many years ago, and now there are no trains anyway.

They would rather die than break the law or break the barrier. However, the barrier was eventually broken anyway!
