    Well, that was kind of obvious, the force of air on the top caused the sign to tilt backward and it came off the hitch (because the hitch wasn't secured/had a broken latch/wasn't strong enough/was the wrong size ball/etc)... The safety chains weren't enough to hold it and once once it slammed down on the left tire - breaking the axle - the fate was sealed...

    My thoughts exactly. All the more reason why I like the pintle/ ball combination style hitches. In many cases the top lock for the pintle can be secured over the stamped steel ball couplers. Then the only way a trailer can come loose is if the tongue fails or something breaks.
