Simple Machine for Processing Semiaxis

In this video, I build a machine for processing semiaxis. The machine will be wooden. For manufacturing I am using the old window jamb.

OK I can see how you could cut the axle down with this machine. What I’m interested in is what happens after you make the cut? Do you re-spline the cut end or do you also cut off the hub and welded back on? I’m having a hard time picturing in my mind how your axle would remain an axle after being cut on your machine? If you’re just looking to cut the axle down to use the steel for other fabrication I understand.

After processing, I just cut the splines with an angle grinder.

Freehand cut splines using an angle grinder? Now I’ve seen everything. The amount of time I spent setting up my Bridgeport with an indexing head to cut my first set of splines was quite long. Just sourcing the correct endmill was a chore. If someone told me they could the job freehand with an angle grinder I would have had some choice words for them. I’m having trouble believing my own eyes. Nice work my fellow craftsman.

Tack weld the cut off splined end on the new end for a guide. It only has to slide in once, not work like a spur gear.

I would have used a special ground profile cutter and a rotary index I just don't have the hand control any more

You don't need no stinking milling machine. Beautiful work with the grinder.
